Stephen King has been keeping us awake since 1973 when his novel Carrie was published. Jerusalem’s Lot was published in 1975 and eventually changed to Salems Lot. This began the Stephen King Rollercoaster that caused very late nights and made us look away from all the dark corners because we were afraid of what we might see. I never let a foot dangle off my bed. There was of course nothing under my bed, monsters don’t exist right?…..Right?
Lets get to it. I have read every Stephen King book at least once. Here are my picks for the top 5 Stephen King books.
1. The Shining
Jack Torrance has a new job at the Overlook Hotel. The hotel is way up in the mountains, perfect for a new start. He will be the off-season caretaker at the old hotel, plenty of family time and time to work on his writing. But as winter sets in, the location feels even more remote and more sinister. The only one to notice the terrible things starting to happen at the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.
2. Dream Catcher
Twenty-five years ago, in their hometown of Derry, Maine, four boys stood bravely together and helped a mentally challenged kid from local bullies. It was something that fundamentally changed them, in ways they could never understand. These four lifelong friends now have separate lives and separate problems. They make it a point to reunite every year to hunt deep in the snowy Maine woods. This time, though, chaos erupts when a stranger stumbles into their camp, freezing, delirious and speaking incoherently about lights in the sky. This throws the four friends into a horrific struggle for survival with an otherworldly threat where their only chance to survive is located in their shared past and the element that bonds them.
3. The Mist
#1 New York Times bestselling author Stephen King’s terrifying novel about a town engulfed in a thick, mysterious mist and there are things in the mist...bad things! This novel was originally published as a short story in another of King's novels-Skeleton Crew. It was made into a TV series, as well as a feature film.
In the wake of a summer storm, terror descends. David Drayton, his son Billy, and their neighbor join dozens of others and head to the local grocery store to replenish supplies after a freak storm. Once there, they become trapped by a strange mist that has completely engulfed the town. As the confinement takes its toll on their nerves, a religious zealot, begins to play on their fears and convince them that this is God’s vengeance for their sins. She insists that a sacrifice must be made and two groups—those for and those against are aligned. Clearly staying in the store may prove deadly, so the Draytons, along with several store employees attempt to make an escape. The things out there may be worse than what they just left behind.
4. Pet Sematary

The Creeds will soon learn that sometimes dead is better.
IT is now a major motion picture
Stephen King’s terrifying, classic #1 New York Times bestseller about seven adults who return to their hometown to go head to head with a nightmare they first stumbled on as teenagers…an evil without a name-It.
Welcome to Derry, Maine. A small city, a place as familiar as your own hometown. Only in Derry the horror is very real.
They were seven teenagers when they first came across the horror. Now they are grown men and women who have gone into the big world to gain happiness and success. But the promise they made twenty eight years ago calls them to meet in the same place where, as teenagers, they fought an evil monster that preyed on the city’s kids. Now, kids are being murdered again and their memories of that terrifying summer come back as they prepare themselves to once again battle the monster lurking in the sewers.
I hope you enjoyed reading about my top 5 Stephen King books. These books kept me awake many night and I can still remember the fear as I read them. I think I will start over and relive that fright.
