In 1916 forty patients moved into the hospital prior to its opening in 1917. The hospital continued to grow in response to the needs of the surrounding area and by the 1930s  the hospital had opened a ward for WWI veterans, another for civilian men, another for women and a separate ward as a Tuberculosis Sanitarium. The 1940s brought electro-convulsive therapy (ECT) into fashion for those suffering from mental illness. The 1950s saw the practice of lobotomies used on the mentally ill. read more

In 1775, the island was named La Isla de los Alcatraces (Island of the Pelicans) by a Spanish explorer, Juan Manuel de Ayala. In 1850 American President Millard Fillmore reserved the island that is located in the San Francisco Bay (about 1.5 miles from San Francisco) for military use. A fortress with 100 cannons was built to protect the San Francisco Bay as was the first operational lighthouse on the west coast. The island was also used by the military as a prison. In the early 1900s, the military inmates built the 600 cell-structure that still stands to this day. Construction was completed around 1912. read more

Let me explain.  Black Mirror is described as a science fiction anthology programme. Each episode is a stand-alone work that takes the viewer into a different world or time in the future and makes the viewer consider both the impact and the consequences of technology on humanity.(wiki.com)


The first episode involves the kidnapping of a British Princess and the stomach-churning ransom demand that the British Prime Minister must have intercourse with a pig on live television. Yup, you read that right. Things just get more complicated from there. But talk about a hook. I found myself on the edge of my seat wondering what the heck will happen next. Yet,  I could not help but sympathize with all involved and wonder if this will be a new type of terrorism in the not too distant future. read more
